AMBLER, PA- The La Salle University Explorers (5-9, 1-1 A-10) split a doubleheader with the George Washington University Colonials (5-8, 1-1 A-10) on Thursday afternoon, dropping the first game 7-1 but redeeming themselves in a dominating 15-5 five-inning win in the second game. Sophomore Angelina Bisbiglia (Sewell, NJ) went 4-7 on the day with a grand slam and five RBIs.
In the first game the Explorers stranded eight runners on base as the Colonials jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning. Junior Danielle Signorelli (Jenkintown, PA) homered to get the only La Salle run of the game, but GW responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
La Salle sophomore pitcher Gina Massaro (Havertown, PA) took the loss in 3.1 innings, giving up five runs. She is 1-4 this season for the Explorers. Freshman Kristin Paoletti (Aldan, PA) gave up two runs in 2.2 innings of relief. GW's Kristin Gabriel got the win.
In the night cap, the Explorers exploded for 17 hits as they run-ruled the Colonials in five innings. La Salle scored eight runs in the fifth as Bisbiglia hit a grand slam, followed by homers from both senior Michelle Sullivan (Gibbstown, NJ) and Kelli Curcio (Hatboro, PA). Sullivan was 3-3 with two doubles and her homer, while Curcio finished 2-4 with two RBIs.
Sophomore Mary Pat Conville(Jamison, PA) tripled in the first to set the tone for the Explorers, and scored on a Bisbiglia single. Curcio then singled in Bisbiglia as La Salle went up 2-0.
Junior Teddi Hernandez (Hanford, CA) singled and scored to tack on another La Salle run. GW responded with two runs in the bottom of the second as Kristin Gabriel hit a two-run double.
La Salle's Sullivan doubled in the third inning and Hernandez brought her in with a sacrifice fly. Massaro followed suit with a three-run slam to give the Explorers some room to breathe leading 7-2.
The Colonials would not quit as they charged back in the fourth inning with two homers to cut the La Salle lead 7-4.
Bisbiglia's grand-slam would spark an eight-run fifth inning for La Salle as Sullivan and Curcio also knocked the ball out of the park as the Explorers ended it early 15-5.
Freshman hurler DJ Guinn (Ronnert Park, CA) got the win for La Salle striking out six in five innings. She goes to 1-3 on the season.
Next up La Salle will host Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday, March 16th beginning at 1:00 PM.
