Lacrosse Downed by Columbia

March 14, 2008

Box Score

NEW YORK, NY - Emily Bonczek scored four goals, but a 14-5 halftime deficit proved to be too large to overcome for the La Salle lacrosse team in a 21-11 loss to Columbia on Friday.

In a stretch that has become all too familiar to the Explorers as of late, a 4-4 game turned into a 14-4 deficit after the Lions netted 10 consecutive goals. Allie Venuti cut the halftime deficit to 14-5 with a goal in the final minute.

Nikki McCurdy opened the scoring in the second half with a goal at the 26:08 mark. After a Columbia score, the La Salle trio of Stefany McKee, Brittany White and Elizabeth Iacullo scored three straight to make it a 15-9 game.

Columbia's Marisa Marcellino extended the lead to 16-9, but the Explorers responded with back-to-back goals from Iacullo and McKee, making it a five-point game.

That would be the closest the Explorers would get, as Columbia closed out the final 16 minutes by outscoring La Salle 5-0.

La Salle (0-6) will next take on local-rival Villanova this Wednesday at 6:30.
