PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University Baseball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting Binghamton on Saturday, 6-1 and 9-1, at Hank DeVincent Field.
In the first game, the Bearcats used four unearned runs in the third inning to take the lead. Explorer starter Jamie Cowan retired the first seven batters before allowing two free passes in the inning.
An error in the outfield loaded the bases before the first run scored on a grounder to first. Kyle Klee had the key hit - the first of the day for the Bearcats - in the inning, a two-run double to right.
He settled down in the fourth - which included getting Ryan James to end the frame on a strikeout, the 100th career K for Cowan at La Salle.
John Rickards made it 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to right field - his 18th career long ball, but that would be all the scoring for the Explorers in the game.
The Bearcats would add two more runs the rest of the way - a solo home run by Joe Charron in the fifth - only the second hit of the day allowed by Cowan - and an RBI double by Charron in the seventh.
Cowan (0-4) suffered the loss for the Explorers after going 4.1 innings and allowing just one earned run. He did walk five batters and struck out three. In 2.2 innings of relief, Zach Huff struck out two, allowed one hit and one unearned run.
Jeff Dennis (1-1) won the game for the Bearcats with a complete game four-hitter. He struck out eight Explorers and allowed just the one run.
Binghamton (5-8) jumped up 5-0 in the second game - the key blow a three-run home run by Tom Baileys. The Bearcats would tack on a run in the second and fourth innings to increase their lead, then added two more in the sixth.
La Salle (2-15) would score its only run in the bottom of the sixth, when Mike Canfarotta doubled to lead off the frame, moved to third on Rickards' fly to center, then scored on a Mike Dertouzos grounder.
Murphy Smith (2-1) struck out seven in five innings of work and earned the win, while Sean Kennedy (0-2) took the loss.
The Explorers will finish their weekend with a game versus Saint Peter's on Sunday, slated for a 12 PM start.
