La Salle Splits With Rhode Island in A-10 Action

March 21, 2008

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, PA-  Slow to start but strong at the finish, the La Salle Softball team (8-10, 2-2 A-10) split a doubleheader against the University of Rhode Island Rams (7-14, 1-1 A-10) as they dropped the first game 5-1, but rallied for a 6-2 victory in game two.  Philadelphia native Laura Beth McCreesh (Philadelphia, PA/ St. Basil) had four strikeouts in seven complete innings to stay unbeaten (5-0) in the second game of the day.

The Rams wasted no time in the first game as they singled in two runs in the first.  In the second, junior Kelli Curcio (Hatboro, PA/ St. Basil) singled to start things off but got no help as she was left stranded.  Curcio went 3-6 for the day offensively, including a double in the second game.

Rhody tacked on two more runs in the second and third to go up 5-0, but the Explorers strung together a rally in the fifth as sophomore Gina Massaro (Havertown, PA/ Hartford) had a leadoff single, and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Sophomore Mary Pat Conville (Jamison, PA/ Archbishop Wood) smacked an RBI double at the next at bat to get La Salle on the board to make it 5-1.  With Conville advancing to third on a passed ball, the Explorers could not convert as the inning ended with a strikeout.

In the sixth, junior Danielle Signorelli (Jenkintown, PA/ St. Basil) doubled, but the blue and gold could do not do any more damage as the Rams got out of the inning untouched.

The Explorers out-hit the Rams 8-6 in the contest, but left 12 runners on base, and had four errors in the loss.  La Salle's Massaro took the loss on the mound; she goes to 1-5 on the season.

In game two, the Rams once again were aggressive with a two-run homer to take an early lead.  Freshman Ali Shepherd (Philadelphia, PA/ Creative & Performing Arts HS) singled to leadoff, followed by a Massaro single, but two groundouts and a strikeout would strand the La Salle base-runners.

McCreesh singled to bring in an RBI in the second, and Signorelli would score on a passed ball to tie it 2-2.  The third inning would go by scoreless for both sides, and in the bottom of the fourth senior Michelle Sullivan (Gibbstown, NJ/ Paulsboro) singled in Shepherd to take La Salle's first lead of the day 3-2.  Sullivan would come up big again in the sixth as she singled in two more runs to make it 5-2.  The Explorers would score one more on a URI error as they got a 6-2 win.

McCreesh gave up just two hits as she stayed perfect on the rubber for La Salle.  The Explorers will take on A-10 foe Massachusetts tomorrow, March 22nd for a 12:00 PM doubleheader, played at the University of Pennsylvania.
