WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Explorers (8-14, 2-4 A-10) were swept in their second doubleheader in a row as the Georgetown Hoyas (13-23) took 4-2 and 8-6 wins on Tuesday night.
The Explorers were out-hit 6-5 in the first game as the Hoyas knocked a three-run homer out to go up 3-0 in the first. La Salle fought back as a two-run double by freshman Ali Shepherd (Philadelphia, PA/ Creative & Performing Arts) shortened the gap 3-2.
An RBI single in the fifth gave the Hoyas the 4-2 edge, but the Explorers had a chance to take the lead in the sixth. Junior Kelli Curcio (Hatboro, PA/ St. Basil) tripled with one out, followed by junior Danielle Signorelli (Jenkintown, PA/ St. Basil) who walked to put two runners on. A pop-up and ground out followed, as the Explorers stranded any hopes of a comeback taking the 4-2 loss.
Sophomore hurler Gina Massaro (Havertown, PA/ Hartford) took the loss for the Explorers as she goes to 1-6 this season.
In the second game the Explorers mounted a furious offensive attack in the first, as sophomore Angelina Bisbiglia (Sewell, NJ/ Camden Catholic) smacked a singled to right field to score both Massaro and sophomore Mary Pat Conville (Jamison, PA/ Archbishop Wood). Conville went 2-4 in the contest.
The Hoyas rebutted with a homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the first, followed by a two-run double in the second to tie it 3-3.
The Explorers gave up the lead in the third as pitcher Laura Beth McCreesh (Philadelphia, PA/ St.Basil) hit a batter with bases loaded to give the Hoyas a 4-3 advantage. Freshman pitcher Kristen Paoletti (Aldan, PA/ Archbishop Prendergast) came in to relieve McCreesh and got a ground out and strikeout to end the inning.
A four-hit fourth inning increased the Hoyas lead to 7-3, but Curcio blasted a two-run homer, her second of the season- to make it 7-5. Freshman DJ Guinn (Ronnert Park, CA/ Rancho Cotate) smacked her first collegiate homerun in the same inning to put the Explorers within one.
The Hoyas scored one more in the fifth on a fielder's choice RBI, and La Salle was silenced 1-2-3 in the final two innings to end it 8-6. With the loss, McCreesh took just her second loss of the season (5-2).
