Explorers' Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Bucknell

March 25, 2008

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, PA - After falling behind by 10 goals in the second half, the La Salle lacrosse team mounted a furious comeback, but came up short in a 16-10 loss to visiting Bucknell on Tuesday. Emily Bonczek paced the Explorers (0-7) with four goals.

The Bison got on the board first in this one, before Bonczek knotted the game at 1-1 at the 26:42 mark. Bucknell then erupted for five-straight scores to take a commanding 6-1 advantage with 18 minutes to play in the opening stanza.

Bonczek and Allie Venuti then responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to three, but Bucknell responded with a pair of their own, making it 8-3.

Stefany McKee found the back of the net with just under eight minutes to play before halftime, trimming the Bison lead to 8-4. Neither team would score for the remainder of the half, as the Explorers entered the break trailing by four.

La Salle's scoreless streak would continue well into the second half. The Bison kept the Explorers off the scoreboard for the first 14:22 of the period, while scoring the first six goals of the half to take a 14-4 lead.

Down but not out, the Explorers fought back as they have all year. Kelly Heiss weaved through the Bison defense and found the back of the cage at the 15:38 mark to spark a 5-0 La Salle run. Bonczek and Erika Matthews each had a pair of goals during the outburst.

Unfortunately the 10-goal deficit proved to be too large to overcome, as the Bison held off the Explorers down the stretch. Elizabeth Iacullo notched a late goal for the final La Salle score of the day.

Paige Kasschau scored four goals, while Sarah Collins and Allison Heffernan each had three for the Bison (3-3).

Ellen Axelsen started in goal for La Salle, making six saves. Mara Schnellenbach relieved her in the second half and stopped four shots. Venuti and Heiss each had four ground balls on the day, while Jessica Hanson led the Explorers with four caused turnovers.

The Explorers open up their Atlantic 10 schedule when they head to the nation's capital this Friday for a game at George Washington.
