AMBLER, PA- Trailing 2-1 with two outs in the final inning, sophomore Mary Pat Conville (Jamison, PA/ Archbishop Wood) drilled a single to center field to give the La Salle Explorers (9-15, 3-5 A-10) a dramatic 3-2 win over the Saint Louis Billikens (12-16, 3-1 A-10) on Saturday afternoon.
"We needed to win today to have a shot at A-10 playoffs," said Conville of what was going through her mind before her game-winning hit.
In the first inning the Billikens had three consecutive hits and scored on an RBI double to lead 1-0. Sophomore Angelina Bisbiglia (Sewell, NJ/ Camden Catholic) singled in freshman Ali Shepherd (Philadelphia, PA/ Creative & Performing Arts) to tie it 1-1 in the third.
The Billikens hit a solo homerun in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage, but La Salle ace Gina Massaro (Havertown, PA/ Hartford) retired the next two batters to keep the damage at a minimum. Massaro (2-7) had nine strikeouts on the day.
The Explorers got themselves into trouble in the fifth giving up two walks and an error to load the bases, but Shepherd got a runner out at the plate, and a fly out to rightfield would end the inning.
Late in the game La Salle put together a two-out rally as Shepherd and Massaro walked to put the winning run on base. Conville got the game-winning single as La Salle ended their five-game losing streak and took another A-10 win.
The Explorers will host St. Peter's College on Tuesday, April 1st at 3:00 PM, played at Rutgers-Camden.
