Explorers Downed by Richmond

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle lacrosse team suffered a 19-5 defeat at the hands of Richmond on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. Alie Venuti, Stefany McKee, Liz Iacullo, Erika Matthews and Emily Bonczek all scored goals for the Explorers (0-9, 0-2 A-10).

Iacullo gave the Explorers an early lead with her goal at the 27:51 mark. However, the Spiders responded in a big way, scoring six straight to take a five-goal lead.

Bonczek cut the deficit to four with 6:44 to play in the half with her 39th goal of the year. Matthews added a score in the half, as La Salle found itself on the wrong end of a 9-3 score at the break.

Richmond continued to pour it on after the intermission, scoring the first five goals of the second half to grab a 14-3 lead. McKee and Venuti scored back-to-back goals to get the deficit down to single digits, but the Spiders scored the last five goals of the game.

Nicole McCurdy and Brittany White each had three ground balls, while Bonczek and Dorothy Schalleur each caused a pair of turnovers.

Mara Schnellenbach got the start in goal for La Salle, making three saves. Ellen Axelsen relieved her in the second half and recorded eight saves.

Allison Furstenburg had five goals and two assists to lead Richmond (4-7, 2-0 A-10), while Anne Ryan added four goals.

La Salle returns to action this Friday when it hosts Atlantic 10 and City 6 foe Temple.
