Softball Gives Fairfield 9-0 Drubbing, Falls to Detroit-Mercy 2-1

KISSIMMEE, FL- The La Salle University softball team got their first win of 2008 with a 9-0 drubbing of the Fairfield University Stags in their first game on Tuesday, and then fell for the second time in two days to the University of Mercy-Detroit 2-1.  Freshman Ali Shepherd (Philadelphia, PA/ Creative & Performing Arts) stayed hot at the plate going 3-4 on the day. 

 

Sophomore hurler Laura Beth McCreesh (Philadelphia, PA/ St. Basil) allowed just three hits to get the win as La Salle finished off Fairfield in six innings in game one.  The Explorers scored five runs in the first inning, followed by four more in the sixth. 

 

Freshman Erica Vile (Philadelphia, PA/ St. Hubert) had her first collegiate homer against the Stags.  Sophomores Angelina Bisbiglia (Sewell, NJ/ Camden Catholic) went 2-4 with two RBIs and Mary Pat Conville (Jamison, PA/ Archbishop Wood) went 2-3 with an RBI.  Shepherd was 1-2 with an RBI double.   

 

La Salle was down 1-0 against UMD Titans in the second game, but tied it in the top of the fourth with two outs as junior Teddi Hernandez (Hanford, CA/ Hanford) singled up the middle to score junior Danielle Signorelli (Jenkintown, PA/ St. Basil).  Freshman pitcher DJ Guinn (Ronnert Park, CA/ Rancho Cotate) came in to relieve freshman Kristin Paoletti (Alanda, PA/ Archbishop Prendergast) in the fourth, and go the Explorers out of a jam to end the inning tied 1-1.

 

In the seventh, two costly errors led to the Titans singling in the winning run to right field with a full count to walk away with a 2-1 win. 

 

Bright spots for the Explorers included Conville, who went 3-4 with a double, and Guinn went 3-3 with two singles and a double.  Guinn (0-2) suffered her second one-run loss in just as many days.
