VILLANOVA, PA - Coming off of their first win of the season, the La Salle lacrosse team suffered a 12-5 loss at Villanova on Thursday evening. Stefany McKee led the Explorers with a pair of goals.
After Villanova took a 3-0 lead to open the contest, Erika Matthews got La Salle on the board with 10:39 to play in the first half. Matthews then dished out an assist to McKee, who scored her first goal at the 8:49 mark. Kelly Heiss knotted the score at 3-3 when she scored on a free position shot just 30 seconds later.
The Wildcats then used a 5-0 run over a 14-minute span to take an 8-3 lead with 20:51 to play in the game.
The Villanova defense held La Salle's top scorer Emily Bonczek scoreless until the 18:37 mark in the second half, as she cut the deficit to four goals. However, goals from Rachel Lasda and Rachael Ponge gave the Wildcats a 10-4 lead.
McKee added her second goal on a free position shot, but Villanova closed out the contest by scoring the final two goals of the evening.
Ellen Axelsen played all 60 minutes in goal, recording 10 saves for the Explorers (1-12).
Taryn McKenna led all players with four goals to pace Villanova (4-8).
La Salle returns home to face UMass in an Atlantic 10 clash this Sunday. Prior to the contest, La Salle will honor its graduating seniors who will be playing in their last game at McCarthy Stadium. Please note the start time for this game has been moved to 12:00 p.m., with Senior Day festivities getting underway at approximately 11:45 a.m.
