CHARLOTTE, NC- The La Salle Explorers (20-24, 6-12 A-10) fell 3-0 to the Charlotte 49er's (29-25, 11-5 A-10) in the first game on the road, getting just one hit in the loss. Sophomore thirdbaseman Mary Pat Conville blasted her first homer of the season in game two.
In the first game, La Salle pitcher Laura Beth McCreesh allowed nine hits in six innings of work to take the loss and go to 11-6 on the season.
Charlotte struck in the first when the 49er's base runner advanced to third and then home on two wild pitches.
The Explorers got their lone hit of the game when sophomore Gina Massaro singled up the middle in the top of the fourth and junior Danielle Signorelli reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and second. La Salle could not get any further as the 49er's retired the next three Explorer batters to get out of trouble.
In the bottom of the fourth Charlotte would get two RBI singles to go up 3-0, a lead they would not relinquish as La Salle suffered an A-10 loss.
In game two, Charlotte again scored early- this time getting their first run on a passed ball, pushing their lead to two with a La Salle fielding error and then taking a 4-0 advantage with a two-run homer.
The Explorers rallied in the fifth, as freshman
Ali Shepherd singled to lead-off. Junior
Kelli Curcio singled up the middle to put runners on first and second, and a 49er's fielding error loaded the bases. Signorelli reached on a fielder's choice to score the first La Salle run, and Conville ripped her first homer of the season- a three-run shot to tie the game at 4-4.
Charlotte responded in the sixth with the go-ahead run with an RBI double to left field.
With the game on the line in the top of the seventh, La Salle's Massaro singled through the the left side of the infield. Next up, Signorelli was out at first but advanced the runner. Conville came up big again with a two-out single to put Massaro on third, but sophomore
Angelina Bisbiglia popped up to end the rally as the Explorers fell 5-4.
Massaro took the loss for La Salle, pitching six complete innings and allowing six hits.
The Explorers will host Fordham University on May 4th at 12:00 PM for a Senior Day doubleheader to be played at Temple-Ambler.
