PHILADELPHIA - After taking two from George Washington on Saturday, the La Salle University Baseball team was looking for the three-game Atlantic 10 Conference sweep, but George Washington gets the 8-4 win Sunday at Hank DeVincent Field.
They jumped up early with three runs in the first inning, two scored on Charlie Kruer's 12th home run of the season, and a third crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
La Salle answered with three of its own, and got two on a costly Colonial error. After Mike Dertouzos doubled to lead off the second, Brian Meagher was hit by a pitch to put two on with no outs.
Zack Feierstein put down a sacrifice bunt and the throw from GW pitcher Eric Cantrell got to second baseman Bryan Hwang in time, but it just caromed off his glove and into foul territory. Dertouzos and Meagher both came around to score and Feierstein advanced all the way to third. He scored on Shane Frangiosa's sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-all.
George Washington (25-26, 11-13 A-10) went up one with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but La Salle was able to knot it up again in the seventh as John Malloy scored on Justin Handler's RBI single.
The Colonials would get the game-winner in the eighth - an RBI single by pinch-hitter Gavin Swanson - then added three insurance runs in the ninth.
Cantrell (5-4) went eight innings and struck out nine to get the win, while Kevin Fuqua (4-9) suffered the loss after eight innings of work as well with four Ks.
La Salle (14-35, 9-15 A-10) plays its final non-conference game Tuesday at Rider with a 2 PM start, then hosts Saint Joseph's in its final A-10 series to end the season.
