Philadelphia, PA- It took a few extra minutes but junior midfielder Colleen Lechner (Rochester, NY/Brighton) was able to blast a rebound into the back of the cage three minutes and 50 seconds into the first overtime to give the La Salle University Explorers (1-0) a 2-1 overtime win over the Monmouth Hawks Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field
In a game played under sporadic light rain showers the Explorer struck first when Maria Allegretto (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville Area) capitalized on Beth Carey's assist at the 8:51 mark of the first half.
Monmouth evened the score when Sarah Keppel beat Emma Ruth with seven minutes and 25 seconds left in the first half.
After a scoreless second half the deciding goal was put into motion on a corner with three minutes and 36 second expired in the extra frame. Lechner initiated the corner with a strong drive that was set up perfectly for Carey's shot which rebounded strongly onto Lechner's stick for the game winner.
Emma Ruth (Lewisberry, PA/Northern) made two saves en route to earning her first win of the season.
The win marked the second straight year that the Explorers started their season off with a win over the Hawks.
The Explorers will travel to Lafayette on Sunday afternoon for a noon match-up with the Leopards.
