Box Score

HAMILTON, NY - La Salle Men's Soccer travelled north for its first game of the season and took on the defending Patriot League champion Colgate Raiders, who were poor hosts - defeating the Explorers, 2-0, Saturday night at Van Doren Field.

Despite being shutout, the Explorers made Raider goalkeeper David Cappuccio earn the win, as they fired two shots on goal through the first seven minutes - one each by Brian Barry and Colin Whalin.

However, Colgate (1-0) would strike with its first goal in the 39th minute as Alex Weekes scored an unassisted goal.

At the break, the Raiders held just a 9-7 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks, but in the second half doubled up on La Salle in corners (4-2) and outshot them 15-6.

Two of the six second half shots were by Ryan Richter, who tried to knot the score at 1-1 with shots on goal in the 59th and 65th minute, but Cappuccio kept the Explorers off the board.

The Raiders got an insurance goal from Chris Ross in the 70th minute as Steven Miller and Matt Schuber were credited with assists.

Cappuccio made a total of seven saves to earn the win in net, while La Salle's Andrew Bernhard stopped six shots, but suffered the loss.

La Salle (0-1) will have the week off, but returns to action next weekend at the Vermont Tournament - facing the hosts on Friday at 4:30 PM and taking on New Hampshire on Sunday at 11:00 AM.
