PHILADELPHIA - Colin Whalen netted a goal for La Salle in the 23rd minute, but Delaware used a second half goal to edge the Explorers 2-1 on Saturday night. The loss drops the Explorers to 1-2-2, while the Blue Hens (1-3-1) picked up their first win.
Delaware got on the board early with an Andy Streilein goal just four minutes into the contest. Streilein took a feed from Craig Aitken and shot the ball on the ground into the left side of the net.
Colin Whalen answered for the Explorers in the 23rd minute. Ryan Richter chipped a shot into the middle of the box and found Whalen, who knocked the ball into the net past Blue Hen goalkeeper Conrad Rusnak.
The teams took a 1-1 tie into the break and just as it appeared there might be overtime involved, Delaware's Abdul Chisbah played a ball in the air past Explorer keeper Andrew Bernhard.
The Explorers made the last seconds of the game very interesting as Jim Davis blasted a shot toward the far left side of the net with only two seconds left, but Rusnak came up with the diving save.
The Blue Hens held a slight 11-10 shot advantage after the teams had only three apiece heading into halftime. Bernhard registered five saves in net for the Explorers and Rusnak stopped seven for the Blue Hens.
The Explorers return to McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday (9/17) for a tilt with Columbia at 7 p.m.
