Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Columbia, 2-1, in Double Overtime

Sept. 17, 2008

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Columbia's Michael Mazzullo blasted a solo shot into the net with 42 seconds remaining in the second overtime to drop La Salle 2-1 on Wednesday night. The Explorers fall to 1-3-2 while the Lions improve to 2-2-1.

Dan Heavey broke through what was a strong defensive matchup to put the Explorers on the board first at the 12:50 mark. Kevin Lydic found Colin Whalen in the left side of the box, who cut the ball through to Heavey. Heavey came up with the score with a low shot into the right corner of the net.

Columbia's Felipe Castrillon answered with a goal in the 73rd minute. Castrillon took a feed from Scott Strickland and put the ball into the air through the right side of Explorer goalie Kyle Quigley.

Neither team could break through for the remainder of regulation and neither generated many offensive chances in the first overtime.

The Explorers dominated the second overtime. They outshot the Lions 5-1 in the period, including two rockets into Lion goalie Alex Aurrichio and a shot that hit off the top post. However, it was Mazzullo who broke through with just 42 seconds remaining and banked the Lions' only shot of the period for the win.

Offensive chances were plentiful for the Explorers. Led by Brian Barry's five shots, they outshot the Lions 22-13 and took four corners to the Lions' one. Defense was the name of the game, though, as Alex Aurrichio registered eight saves in the Lion goal. Quigley took the loss in the Explorer net and finished with four saves.

The Explorers hit the road this weekend for a match at Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday at 1 p.m.
