PHILADELPHIA, PA – La Salle Women’s Soccer returned to McCarthy Stadium for the first time since its season-opener and Melanie Gamble scored a pair of goals and Amy Grant earned a shutout in net for the Explorers as they return to the win column with a 3-0 victory over NJIT, Friday night in non-conference action.
The Explorers opened the 2008 season with a 3-0 victory over Delaware State, but have been on the road for their last five games, which has included a pair of 3-2 losses to nationally-ranked teams and a 1-1 draw in their last match at UC Riverside.
It took just 221 seconds for La Salle to score its first goal back home, as Dana O'Brien notched her team-leading fifth of the season to give her team the 1-0 lead. Alex Conley dribbled up the left side of the field and registered her team-leading third assist of the season when she crossed it to O’Brien for the tally.
For the Explorers second goal of the night, it was O’Brien’s turn to do the dishing, as she found Gamble in front of the net for her first of the night in the 33rd minute.
Gamble tacked on her fourth of the season to give La Salle a 3-0 advantage in the 63rd minute – a header off an Ally Kenney cross – to record her first two-goal of her career, while Kenney gets her first assist of the season.
Grant made three saves in the net for the Explorers to earn her 11th career win and her sixth career shutout.
NJIT (1-8-0) managed three shots in the game, a pair by Christie Taylor, and Sadie Mele took the loss in goal, while making six saves.
La Salle (4-2-1) is next in action on Sunday, when the Explorers return to the road with a game at Monmouth, beginning at 1 PM. They will open up Atlantic 10 Conference action next weekend at Charlotte, Friday at 7 PM.
