CHARLOTTE, NC - La Salle Women's Soccer, who was playing the program's 400th career match, opened up Atlantic 10 Conference play at Charlotte, Friday night, and the 49ers handed the Explorers a 6-0 defeat.
The 49ers, who had compiled a 17-2-1 regular-season record over the last two years in conference play and had won the past two A-10 regular season titles, had beaten every conference team in that span except for the Explorers. La Salle had beaten them in their only previous meeting, 2-1, on October 6, 2006 at McCarthy Stadium.
Charlotte (5-3-1, 1-0-0 A-10) made sure of its win by putting up six goals on the board, the first in the 28th minute by Oni Bernard, her fourth of the season. Just 10 minutes later, Sam Huecker added the first insurance goal - her third of the year - followed by another tally five minutes later by Hailey Beam, her fifth of 2008.
The game was put away just three minutes after intermission as Nikki Dumencich and Whitney Weinraub put Charlotte up 5-0 with goals at the 46:39 and 47:30 mark of the game. Weinraub would add her eighth of the year in the 52nd minute to put the finishing touches on their victory.
The last time a La Salle opponent put at least six goals on the board was September 2, 2001, when the Explorers lost 6-0 to Arizona State at the Baylor Invitational. The last time La Salle lost by at least six goals in A-10 play was a 7-1 defeat versus George Washington at McCarthy Stadium on September 27, 1996.
Speaking of the Colonials, La Salle (4-4-1, 0-1-0 A-10) will host George Washington on Sunday at 1 PM at McCarthy Stadium, where the Explorers are 2-0 so far in 2008 and have won six of their last seven.
Of note, in the program's 400 career games, La Salle holds a 144-233-23 record.
