On January 14, La Salle University extended a welcome to various area elementary schools to attend a noon-time basketball game featuring the Explorers and the Richmond Spiders in an Atlantic 10 match up. While the event was open to all members of the La Salle community, the focus was on the children who would spend their day cheering on the Explorers.
Over 1300 students from James Logan Elementary, Joseph Pennell Elementary,San Miguel Academy, Our Lady of Hope School and Building Blocks Child Development Center were treated to lunch as well as the game. Additionally, each child was given a gold pom pom to use in cheering on the Explorers.
The women's basketball team recognized Logan principal, Mark Wilicki, as the Honorary Coach of the game. Wilicki, who works closely with the members of the La Salle community, helped to create the Elementary School Day Program four years ago and has continued to bring his entire student body each year.
Students from the five schools, who were already ecstatic for the event, grew even more animated, stomping their feet and cheering as the teams came onto the court prior to tip-off. The energy of La Salle's women's team throughout the game helped to further the overall great atmosphere in Tom Gola Arena.
Throughout the game, children from the various schools had the opportunity to participate in activities on the court and take home prizes. They were cheered on by their peers and chaperones as well as La Salle's spirit teams and fans.
The Athletic Department's annual Elementary School Day was organized as part of the ongoing initiatives of La Salle's Project Teamwork, which is directed by Mike Ellerson.
"La Salle is excited to host this community event each year. We enjoy inviting local kids and giving them an experience on a college campus," said Ellerson.
