PHILADELPHIA – In front of a crowd of elementary school students, the La Salle volleyball team hosted city rival Temple at Tom Gola Arena on Tuesday afternoon. The Explorers rallied late, but a match-high 17 kills from Temple junior Yun Yi Zhang wrapped up the match for the Owls, 3-0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-17).
Down 2-0 through two sets, the Explorers ran off four straight points, courtesy of a Rachel Stemper kill and three attack errors from Temple, to tie the third set up at five.
The Owls went ahead down the stretch, 14-8, but La Salle recorded six of the next seven points to cut the deficit to one, 15-14. Zhang sealed the win for Temple when she notched the final two kills of the set, 25-17.
Stemper tied the match-high with 10 digs and freshman Kelly Scanlon led all Explorers with six kills. Junior Carly Conlon posted a team-high 11 assists and sophomore Kourtney Clark contributed nine assists, four digs and three service aces.
For Temple, senior Jackie Morrison led all participants with 29 assists while adding 10 digs, two kills, a service ace and an assisted block. Sophomore Jasmine Waters posted a .625 attack percentage (6K-1E-8TA) including three total blocks (BS, 2 BA).
The Explorers (3-20, 0-5) will host Rhode Island on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:00 p.m. ET.
