PHILADELPHIA - Gabrielle Pakhtigian notched her third solo shutout of the season and Melanie Gamble scored the game-winning goal to lift La Salle Women's Soccer to a 1-0 victory over Temple on Friday evening at McCarthy Stadium in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
The shutout was the Explorers seventh of 2009, tying them with the 2004 squad for the most shutouts in a single season at the school, while Temple (5-9-1, 1-6-0 A-10) was shutout for just the third time this season.
Despite several first half scoring chances, La Salle could not break through on the scoreboard and the teams entered the break knotted at 0-0.
In the 60th minute, the Explorers tallied the lone goal of the match as Ally Kenney played a ball into Traci DePasquale on the left side. She turned then passed the ball across the top of the box to Gamble who beat Owl goalie Kara Williams.
For Gamble, it was her fifth tally of the season and her second game winner. She now has 16 career goals, tied for ninth on the school's all-time list. Kenney was credited with her eighth assist of 2009, now tied for eighth all-time for a single season and it was the 13th of her career, tying for ninth all-time.
DePasquale's assist puts her even rarer company; in fact she is all by herself in one. It was her 10th assist of the season, tying her for second all-time in a single season and she now becomes the only Explorer, Men's or Women's, to have a pair of 10 or more assist seasons.
It was her fourth straight game registering at least a point, the longest stretch on the team, it was her fifth game-winning assist, it was her 28th career assist (second all-time) and 82nd career point (third all-time).
Lastly, DePasquale has either scored or registered an assist on the first La Salle goal in 10 of La Salle's 16 games this season.
Pakhtigian made a pair of saves to improve to 4-2 in her freshman campaign as she picked up the win in goal.
La Salle (9-5-2, 3-3-1 A-10) will next face Saint Joseph's on Sunday in a crucial conference match. Both teams sit in a tie for seventh place in the A-10 standings with 10 points and currently, just three points separate third through eighth place.
It will be the Explorers final home game of the 2009 season and they will honor their seniors before the match, which begins at 3 PM.
