Field Hockey Eliminated From Playoff Hunt With 6-3 Loss At UMass

Oct. 30, 2009

Box Score

AMHERST, MA - La Salle was eliminated from the Atlantic 10 field hockey playoff chase with a 6-3 loss to #19 Massachusetts on Friday. Junior Beth Carey scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Explorers. Classmate Emma Ruth made 11 saves in goal.

The Blue and Gold needed to upset the Minutewomen and have Temple drop a pair of games to Saint Louis and Richmond this weekend to qualify for the four-team tournament. The Owls defeated SLU, 6-2, so even a win at UMass would not have been enough for the Explorers.

Freshman Rebecca Chylack scored her tenth goal of the season just 70 seconds into the contest off a corner to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Carey and senior Haley Froshour earned the assists.

UMass' (11-8, 2-3 A-10) Cher King then scored a remarkable four unanswered goals in a span of 25 minutes to give the Minutewomen a 4-1 lead. The two teams traded goals over the final 20 minutes, with Carey scoring both of La Salle's, to wrap up the scoring. Freshman Neelam Kumar assisted on Carey's second tally.

The hosts held a 30-11 advantage in shots and an 11-6 lead in corners.

La Salle (7-12, 2-4 A-10) will complete its 2009 season with a non-conference game at Bryant on Saturday at 5 PM.
