Feb. 11, 2009

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle Women's Basketball had a chance - with a victory over Saint Joseph's on Wednesday night - to tie with Temple for the Big 5 Title. However, the Hawks got the victory, 59-42, at the Daskalakis Athletics Center.

To start the game off, Ashley Logue and Morgan Robertson alternated baskets, as both scored four quick points. Margaret Elderton gave La Salle its only lead of the night, 6-4, with a short jumper at the 17:12 mark.

Saint Joseph's (11-13, 3-6, 3-1 Big 5) responded with nine straight points with Jenna Loschiavo scoring four of her game-high tying 15 points to cap the stretch, the last two were a pair of free throws at the 14:15 mark to give the Hawks a 13-6 advantage.

For the next six minutes, the Explorers could not get under the seven-point deficit - the last time with a Robertson lay-up at the 8:35 mark pulled La Salle to within 24-17.

However, a Hawk 11-2 run over the next four minutes started with a Loschiavo three - she hit three in the game - and ended with back-to-back baskets from Logue, who also scored 15 in the contest, and with 4:57 left until the break, Saint Joseph's led 35-19.

La Salle would hold the Hawks scoreless for almost six minutes, but could only manage four points before the break - both from Jamie Walsh, who scored a game-high 10 for the Explorers.

Elderton cut the deficit back to 10 (35-25) with a driving lay-up for the first basket of the second half, but an 11-2 Hawk run over the next six minutes would give Saint Joseph's its largest lead of the night of 19.

La Salle would respond with seven straight points - a Walsh three, and baskets from Nadia Duncan and Jenna Gilbert - pulled the Explorers to within 12 (46-34).

Mary Kate McDade knocked down her only points of the game - a three - and the Explorers would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Walsh added four rebounds to her totals, while four other Explorers also grabbed at least four led by Danielle Mickiewicz with six. Ashley Gale and Elderton, GIlbert, and Robertson all scored six points, while Robertson was limited to just 19 minutes due to foul trouble.

Despite grabbing 14 offensive boards, equaling the Hawks' total, Saint Joseph's held an 18-6 advantage in second-chance points and, in the first half, had a 24-12 advantage in points-in-the-paint - finishing with 34 to 26.

La Salle (10-14, 1-8 A-10, 2-2 Big 5) return to action hosting Charlotte on Saturday at Tom Gola Arena with a 12 PM tip.
