PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle softball team opened up its 2009 season this morning at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Explorers opened play with a 9-0 five-inning loss to Valparaiso and dropped a 2-0 decision in the second game of the day against Robert Morris.
Sophomore pitcher D.J. Guinn pitched a strong game against Robert Morris, letting up only two runs in a complete game effort. She threw six shutout innings, with the Colonials' only two runs coming in the sixth off of a big hit.
Junior Mary Pat Conville gave the Explorers a big chance to get on the board in the fourth inning with a two-out triple, but the team could not capitalize and stranded Conville on third.
In the earlier game, the Explorers got five hits including a line-drive single to left field by senior Teddi Hernandez, but Valparaiso kept them off the board. Valpo scored five of its nine runs in the fifth inning.
The Explorers return to action tomorrow with a game against Eastern Kentucky at 3:00 PM followed by a tilt with Yale at 5:00 PM.
