La Salle Tops Villanova, 7-6

Philadelphia, PA – The La Salle lacrosse team, led by sophomore Ashley Rutz’s game-high four goals, scored five unanswered points in the first period and eventually went on to defeat city-rival Villanova at McCarthy Stadium on Tuesday evening, 7-6.

Rutz quickly put the Explorers on the scoreboard with a goal at the 26:39 mark of the first period, 1-0. After trailing 2-1 nearly 10 minutes into regulation, La Salle scored five consecutive goals which were capped off by freshman Nora McGurkin with 8:29 to go in the first, 6-2.

Aside from Rutz’s game-high four goals, junior Stefany McKee followed up with two goals of her own in addition to an assist. Freshman Allison Herman was the game’s assist leader with two.

Rutz recorded a game-high three caused turnovers and also picked up three ground balls in the win. Junior Dorothy Schalleur contributed two ground balls and two draw controls for the Explorers.

For the Wildcats, seniors Taryn McKenna and Katie Stone each scored two goals apiece and sophomore Mia Naccarato controlled the draw a game-high four times.

La Salle had four successful clears on four attempts and also forced 23 Villanova turnovers.

The Explorers (3-3) will take a week off from competition before traveling to Lehigh next Tuesday for a 3:30 PM start time.
