First Inning Sinks Explorers in Rain-Drenched Game Against Penn

April 1, 2009

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - A big first inning by the University of Pennsylvania was enough to hold of the La Salle softball team, as the Explorers fell 9-1 in the first game of what should have been a doubleheader. With the loss, the Explorers fall to 3-14 overall while the Quakers improve to 6-17-1.

The second game of the twinbill made it to the bottom of the third inning before being called due to heavy rain. Penn led 6-3 when the game was called, but the game does not count since it was only the third inning. Unfortunately, that also means that Shannon Skomorucha's first collegiate home run does not count in the statistics. Skomorucha belted a three-run blast to centerfield in the second inning to also score Angelina Bisbiglia and Erica Vile, the first homer by an Explorer at the new softball field.

Gina Massaro had pitched all three innings and fanned four despite the wet conditions.

The first inning of the first game was a forgettable one. Keiko Uraguchi drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second when she beat a throw on Bridget McDugall's at-bat. The bases loaded when Explorer pitcher DJ Guinn hit Alisha Prystowsky with a pitch, and the first run scored in a bases-loaded walk to Jamie Boccanfuso. The Quakers' Taylor Tieman punched a bit more with a grand slam to left center in the next at-bat.

Guinn settled down after that when she struck out Kelsey Wolfe. Sara Patrick then reached with a single, but Meg Krasne grounded into a double play on the next at-bat to end the inning.

The Quakers struck for two more runs in the second to put the score at 7-0 before the Explorers got on the board in the bottom of the same inning. Angelina Bisbiglia reached base on the first of four Quaker errors and advanced to second on another Quaker miscue. She moved to third on a groundout by Guinn and scored on Breanna DiTommaso's fielder's choice hit.

The score moved to 9-1 in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Prystowsky and two more 1-2-3 half innings ended the game.

The Explorers play again on Thursday when they host the University of Delaware in a 3:00 PM doubleheader.
