Timely Bonnie Hits Drop Explorers Twice on Saturday Afternoon

April 11, 2009

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle offense came alive for 15 hits and the defense committed just one error in two games, but Saint Bonaventure won both games with their own timely hits. The Bonnies won 4-2 in game one, and got on the board early and held off the Explorers 4-3 in the second game.

Gina Massaro and Angelina Bisbiglia led the Explorer offense by each going 3-for-6 from the plate. Shannon Skomorucha also went 2-for-3 with a RBI in the first game, while Erica Vile went 2-for-3 in game two.

With the score tied at two apiece heading into the bottom of the sixth of the first game, the Bonnies' Kara Morenus blasted a two-run home run. The Bonnie defense then forced three consecutive Explorer outs in the seventh to preserve the 4-2 score.

The Explorers opened scoring on DJ Guinn's RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning. Bisbiglia belted a lead-off single to right field and advanced on Vile sacrifice. She then advanced to third on a Bonnie passed ball. Guinn came up to bat and hit a fly ball deep into center to score Bisbiglia. Skomorucha followed with a single, but Bonnie pitcher Sherri Thompson registered a strikeout to end the inning.

The Explorer lead did not last long as the Bonnies struck for a run in the bottom of the second. Amanda Kotz led off with a double to right center and eventually scored on a Brooke Frey fly ball to right field.

The Bonnies put another run on the board in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead of the day. A lead-off single followed by a RBI double put the score at 2-1.

Mary Pat Conville led off the sixth with a single to third base followed by a Bisbiglia single to left center. Conville advanced to third on a Guinn fly ball to center and scored on Skomorucha's RBI single to center to tie up the ballgame before Morenus' home run in the bottom of the inning for the final score.

Massaro went the distance on the mound and gave up four runs - three earned - on seven hits and struck out five. Thompson also pitched a complete game for the Bonnies. She gave up two runs on nine hits and fanned eight.

The second game was decided early on as the Bonnies hit for four runs in the first two innings to put the game out of reach. Shelly Seeger belted a lead-off triple to right field and scored the first run on Kathryn Pazda's single.

They ran the score to 4-0 in the second on three hits and three wild pitches.

Explorer bats exploded for four hits in the fourth inning to make it a one-run game. Massaro doubled to left to lead off the inning followed by a Conville single to short. Bisbiglia followed up with a RBI single to center to score Massaro. Erica Vile loaded the bases with a single to left. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Skomorucha reached on a fielder's choice and Conville scored on the play.

Bisbiglia, who advanced to third on that play, then scored on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning. Laura Gallagher reached on a hit-by-pitch to put runners on first and second, but the inning ended when Alicia Dela Rosa hit to the left side for the force-out at third.

Neither team managed another run for the final 4-3 score.

Guinn suffered the loss on the mound after giving up the four runs in 1.1 innings of work. She struck out two and walked none. Kristin Paoletti worked a few outs in relief before Massaro came back on to pitch the final four innings. She gave up no runs, only one hit and struck out three. Thompson pitched the first three innings and gave up three runs on four hits while striking out two. Erin Nargi came on in relief and limited Explorer bats to two hits over the final four innings while also registering two strikeouts.

The Explorers return to action on Tuesday (4/14) when they host Rider in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
