Philadelphia, PA – After returning from a road trip that nearly spanned two weeks, the La Salle lacrosse team was in search of a victory at home, but Richmond scored early and finished strong which ultimately awarded them with the victory, 14-5.
The Spiders scored three consecutive goals in the first five minutes of play, but it was junior Jill Davis who snapped Richmond’s scoring streak at the 23:28 mark, 3-1. Richmond went ahead, 5-1, courtesy of two Alli Furstenburg goals, but the Explorers answered back with a goal from junior Stefany McKee, 5-2. With 4:38 remaining, sophomore Ashley Rutz closed out the first period with a goal to cut Richmond’s lead to five at halftime, 8-3.
In the second half, Richmond scored the first four goals and, in total, tallied six of the eight goals in the period to open their lead.
Davis scored a team-high three goals and also added a ground ball and a caused turnover. McKee and Rutz each contributed a goal with Rutz also collecting two caused turnovers, a ground ball and a draw control. Freshman Allison Herman was credited with the only La Salle assist, sophomore Nicole McCurdy picked up a game-high five ground balls and freshman Nora McGurkin also totaled a game-high with six draw controls.
For Richmond, freshman Caitlin Fifield scored three goals, Furstenburg added two and nine others recorded one.
The Spiders edged the Explorers in ground balls, 16-15, but La Salle had the advantage in draw controls, 12-9.
The Explorers also went 5-for-6 on clears in the game. The Explorers (4-10, 1-5) venture on their final road trip of the season as they travel to George Washington on Sunday for a 1:00 PM start time.
