PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle offense exploded for nine hits on Friday afternoon to overwhelm conference foe Dayton 7-1. Gina Massaro led with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate while DJ Guinn and Laura Gallagher added two hits apiece.
The Explorers wasted no time in getting on the board as they struck for three runs in the bottom of the first. Massaro put down one of her two bunt singles and advanced to third when third baseman Brandy Brown mis-threw a Mary Pat Conville ground ball. One out later, Erica Vile singled in the first run with a smack up the middle to score Massaro.
Guinn followed up the first score with a two-RBI double through the left side to score Conville and Vile.
Ali Shepherd blasted a home run to deep center in the bottom of the second. Her two-RBI rip scored Gallagher, who reached on a single to left center.
The Flyers had a chance in the third inning as Katie Jordan drew a walk and advanced to second on an Alicia Nichols single just out of Conville's reach. Megan Lee laid down a sac bunt to put runners at second and third but Massaro worked out of the jam with a strikeout to end the threat.
Dayton worked into a similar situation in the fourth with runners at second and third, but Massaro caught Jordan looking at the third strike. The Flyers did break the scoreless drought in the fifth on a solo shot by Lee. The damage could have been worse, however, as bases were loaded. Brown blasted a ball deep to center to put the Explorer faithful on edge, but Gallagher made the stretching catch to end the inning.
The Explorers tacked on a run in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Massaro put down a bunt to lead off the fifth and beat the throw to first. Conville then reached base on a fielder's choice that saw Massaro get out. Conville advanced to second on Angelina Bisbiglia's grounder to the pitcher and scored on a wild pitch followed by a fielding error by the Flyers' Brown.
Guinn led off the sixth with a single to left center. Brianna DiTommaso pinch ran and scored when Gallagher doubled through the left side for the 7-1 score.
Dayton attempted a rally in the seventh but fell short. Molly Meyer singled up the middle and advanced to second on a Lee sac bunt. Maci followed up with a double down the left field line and Meyer crossed home plate. Massaro then threw the ball over to Conville to challenge and Meyer was called out due to not touching third base. A Lauren Nacke groundout to third ended the game.
The Explorers and Flyers meet again on Saturday for a noon game. Senior Day festivities will take place approximately 15 minutes prior to the game to honor seniors Teddi Hernandez and Alicia Dela Rosa.
