Explorers on Short End of Tight 2-1 Contest at Drexel

April 29, 2009

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Three players went 2-for-3 from the plate and the La Salle softball team mounted a rally in the seventh, but ended up on the short end of a 2-1 score at Drexel on Wednesday afternoon.

Gina Massaro, Shannon Skomorucha and Alicia Dela Rosa registered two hits apiece for the Explorers, while Mary Pat Conville went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

The Explorers went ahead 1-0 in the top of the third on Conville's sacrifice fly to score Dela Rosa, who reached on one of her two hits on the day.

That was the only run the Explorers could muster though as they scattered eight hits and left 10 on base.

The Dragons responded with the equalizer and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sandi Wambold ripped a shot to left field, which was tracked down by Erica Vile to prevent the ball from going over the fence, but she stayed on base when Vile could not hang on to the catch. Elena Fravel came in to pinch run and eventually scored by advancing on a ground-out and a wild pitch. The second run scored when back-to-back singles put runners on second and third followed by a long fly ball to left field by Katy Harrington to score Christina Rodriguez from third.

The Explorers attempted a rally in the top of the seventh and were able to load the bases before a ground-out ended the game. Dela Rosa smacked her second hit of the game just past the shortstop and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Massaro. Conville singled to left and advanced to second on the throw to put runners at second and third. The bases loaded with two outs when Dragon pitcher Hillary Allen intentionally walked Vile, but a ground-out ended the Explorers' chances.

Massaro took the loss in the pitcher's circle for the Explorers as she gave up two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of work. She also struck out five and walked none. DJ Guinn pitched 0.2 inning in relief. Allen picked up the win for the Dragons as she pitched a complete game, gave up one run on eight scattered hits, struck out five and walked two.
