La Salle Drops Conference Game to Duquesne, 13-5

Pittsburgh, PA - After defeating city-rival Temple last Sunday, the La Salle lacrosse team traveled across the state in the hope of picking up their second straight conference win, but an early start in favor of Duquesne gave the Dukes the win, 13-5. The Explorers are now 0-1 on their current four-game road trip.

It was a scoreless game with a little over five minutes in, until freshman Katie Rekart put Duquesne on the scoreboard at the 24:11 mark of the first period, 1-0. The Dukes went on to score the next five goals which gave them a 6-0 advantage. All five goals were attributed to senior Ashley Wood (3) and junior Sarah Cates (2).

Freshman Nora McGurkin scored the final two goals of the first period to cut La Salle’s deficit to four, 6-2, at the midway point. McGurkin scored a team-high two goals and also recorded three draw controls and two ground balls for La Salle.

Duquesne opened up the second period with four consecutive goals and eventually outscored the Explorers in the final frame, 7-3.

Wood tallied game-highs of five goals and six caused turnovers in Duquesne’s Friday afternoon win. Junior Meghan Frederick collected all six assists for the Dukes which also marked a game-best.

Aside from McGurkin, junior Jill Davis, junior Stefany McKee and freshman Sara Ciaverelli each posted one goal in the conference loss.

The Explorers (4-6, 1-2) will play the second of four consecutive road games on Sunday when they take on St. Bonaventure at 1:00 PM.
