TOWSON, Md. - Angelina Bisbiglia blasted her first home run of the season and Erica Vile went 4-for-7 with a RBI, but the La Salle softball team lost two heartbreakers at Towson on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers took the first game 3-2 in nine innings and the second game 2-1 on a walk-off home run in the seventh.
Bisbiglia led off the second inning of the first game with her blast to left field to put the Explorers up 1-0. The score was pushed to 2-0 in the fourth inning on Shannon Skomorucha's RBI double to left center to score Erica Vile, who had reached on a single up the middle.
The Explorers got two straight outs to start the bottom of the seventh inning and were one out from the win before the Tigers plated two on two doubles, an error and a passed ball to send it to extra innings. They eventually scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Mindy Bean singled in Kim Lempa, who led off the inning with a hit.
Gina Massaro went the distance in the pitcher's circle for the Explorers. She gave up three runs - two earned - on eight hits and four walks, and struck out five. The Tigers' Shannon Johnson also pitched the entire game and gave up two runs - both earned - on six hits, while walking three and striking out five.
Game two was another tight affair. The Explorers got on the board first again on Vile's RBI single in the fourth. Massaro bunt singled and advanced to second when Mary Pat Conville was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Vile singled to left to score Massaro.
Towson tied it up in the fifth inning on a lead-off home run to left field by Joyce Delp. The Explorers then registered three straight outs to end any more Tiger threats.
Conville, Bisbiglia and Vile each got an infield single in the sixth inning, but the Tigers prevented anyone from reaching home plate to leave the score knotted at one apiece.
The Tigers' Sammi DiPompo broke the tie on a lead-off home run in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
DJ Guinn pitched a terrific game for the Explorers as she allowed only three hits, did not issue a walk and struck out five batters. The Tigers' Kelly Ebner went all seven innings, allowed one run on five hits, walked none and struck out six.
The Explorers return home on Thursday when they host George Washington in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
