Schoch Caps Comeback With Two-RBI Single in Eighth

April 7, 2009

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Marc Schoch knocked in a team-high three runs, including two with a single in the eighth inning which capped the Explorers' comeback, and helped La Salle Baseball to a 10-8 victory over Temple on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Hank DeVincent Field.

For Schoch, the three RBI matches his season-high and gives him 21 for the season - second on the team. He has now hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games including six straight.

Speaking of hitting streaks, Justin Handler extended his team-long hitting streak to 10 games, as he went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI, and three runs scored.

Temple (13-14) jumped out to a five-run lead thanks to the long ball. Jamie Abercrombie hit a two-run shot in the second, Sean Barksdale hit a two-run homer in the third and after Tony Jusino hit a solo shot in the top of the sixth, the Owls led 7-2.

The Explorers, who plated a pair in the third on an RBI triple by Tony Negrin and an RBI double from Jeff Flax, started their comeback in the bottom of the sixth.

Schoch knocked in his first run with a double, scoring Handler, and then came around to score - with John Malloy - on a two-run double by Zack Feierstein.

In the seventh, they pulled to within 7-6 with a Chris Umstead sacrifice fly to center, which plated Handler.

La Salle (12-15) plated four runs in the eighth all with two-out and was started thanks to Negrin's speed - which forced a wild throw from short - and he then moved to second on a wild pitch.

Flax drove him in with his third hit of the day and TJ Chism drew a full-count walk to keep the inning alive. Handler then hit an RBI double to put La Salle in front 8-7 and Schoch gave the Explorers a three-run lead with his two-RBI single.

Christian Schulz (2-1) then finished off the Owls to get the win. He was La Salle's third pitcher of the afternoon and went three innings, allowed just two hits, one run, and struck out three.

La Salle returns to action Wednesday hosting Coppin State at Hank DeVincent Field with first pitch at 3 PM.
