Explorers Drop 5-0 Decision at #24 UMass

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle softball team was no-hit by National Player of the Year candidate Brandice Balschmiter in a 5-0 loss at #24 Massachusetts on Friday afternoon.

Angelina Bisbiglia broke up Balschmiter's perfect game bid by drawing a walk in the fifth and Erica Vile drew a walk in the seventh inning.

The Minutewomen scored three times in the first and twice in the second for the game's scoring, but Gina Massaro and DJ Guinn combined to hold them off the board for the remainder of the game. The Minutewomen managed only two scattered hits after the second inning.

Carly Normandin, Whitney Mollica and Samantha Salato each scored in the first inning as Normandin and Salato reached on doubles and Mollica on a walk. Davina Hernandez and Whitney Williams added the two more runs as Hernandez reached on a fielder's choice and Williams on a walk.

Massaro suffered the loss as she went four innings, gave up five runs on six hits, walked four and struck out two. Guinn went two innings, gave up just one hit, walked two and struck out one. Balschmiter pitched a complete game and struck out 15 in the effort.

The Explorers and Minutewomen square off again on Saturday (5/2) at 12:00 PM.
