May 10, 2009

Box Score

DAYTON, OH - La Salle Baseball's Kevin Fuqua held Dayton to its lowest output in more than a month, however the Explorers managed just one run of their own as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Flyers on Sunday in Atlantic 10 Conference action at TWC Stadium.

With the victory and a 10-3 loss by Rhode Island, Dayton moves into sole possession of first place in the A-10 standings with just one weekend remaining.

Fuqua, who dropped to 4-4 with the loss, held the Flyers scoreless through the first five innings and allowed just two runs in the sixth. The last time Dayton was held to two runs or less was April 5 in a 3-0 loss at Rhode Island.

He threw his second complete game of 2009 - the eighth of his career - surrendered seven hits, walked two and struck out seven. He pushed his career strikeout total to 125, which places him eighth on the all-time list, less than 100 shy of the all-time mark.

Dayton (34-15, 19-4 A-10) plated its two runs on an RBI double by Jake Hoover and a two-out RBI single by Jimmy Roesinger.

La Salle had a chance to do some damage in the top of the seventh, as the Explorers loading the bases with no outs thanks to a pair of singles from Justin Handler and John Malloy and a TJ Chism walk.

However, Flyer starter Quinn Haselhorst got a double-play ball and a pop up to end the threat with just Handler scoring the only Explorer run of the game.

Haselhorst (8-3) threw eight innings, allowed just four hits, one run, and struck out seven batters. Sean Finn picked up his fifth save of the season by throwing a scoreless ninth.

The last time the Explorers were held to one run or less was March 13 in a 2-0 loss to Cleveland State. The last time they were held to one run or less in a conference game was a 6-0 loss to Rhode Island on April 27, 2008.

La Salle (18-26, 7-15 A-10) will conclude its three-game series at Dayton on Monday with first pitch scheduled for 1 PM.
