DAYTON, OH - La Salle Baseball dropped a 6-2 decision at Dayton on Saturday at TWC Stadium in the teams' Atlantic 10 series opener. With the win, the Flyers post their 10th straight conference victory and pull them even with Rhode Island for first place in the standings.
Dayton jumped out to an early three-run lead and never looked back. Marshall MacDonald put the Flyers on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly, then Jimmy Roesinger hit a two-run homer in the second.
La Salle twice cut the Flyer lead to a pair of runs, but Dayton would respond with single runs of its own to keep the Explorers at a distance.
John Malloy hit a two-out bases loaded infield single to plate Zack Feierstein in the third only to see Scott Dunwoody hit a solo home run in the fourth.
In the fifth, Justin Handler drove in Brian Meagher with a double to cut the team's deficit to 4-2. However, Dayton again responded with a Cole Tyrell RBI single in the bottom of the frame to push its lead back to three.
Dayton (33-15, 18-4 A-10) plated an unearned run in the seventh on a Max Navalinski single to provide the game's final run. Even though the Flyers match the Rams' 18-4 record in the A-10, Rhode Island owns the tiebreaker as they took three from Dayton on April 4-5.
Cameron Hobson - a three-time A-10 Rookie of the Week honoree this season - improved to 6-1 after going eight innings, allowing six hits, two runs and striking out 10 batters. Zach Huff dropped to 0-1 in 2009 after throwing four innings and allowing five runs. Drew Gerhart pitched the final four innings for La Salle and allowed just the one unearned run.
La Salle (18-25, 7-14 A-10) will continue its A-10 series at Dayton on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 PM.
