PHILADELPHIA - Senior Haley Froshour scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to give La Salle a 4-3 victory over visiting Longwood on a rainy Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. Froshour, an all-Atlantic 10 selection as a junior defender last fall, picked an opportune time for her first collegiate goal, sending a high-arching shot from the wing to give the Explorers their first overtime victory of the season.
"It was great to see the players come back after being down 3-2 late in the game," head coach Michelle Marks said. "We tied it up with less then a minute left in the game and had some momentum going into overtime. Haley did a great job finishing and coming up with the game-winner."
After La Salle scored twice early to take a 2-0 lead, Longwood came roaring back in the second stanza. The visitors tied the game on Olga Knop's goal in the 63rd minute and took a 3-2 lead when Catie Furbush found the back of the cage with less than four minutes to play.
But the Explorers didn't give up. They took full advantage of a corner with under a minute remaining, as junior Beth Carey guided a perfect pass to Froshour, who stopped the ball for freshman Rebecca Chylack. She took a big swing and sent a driving shot past Longwood keeper Amy Lewis to tie the game at 3-3. It was the only shot that La Salle attempted in the second half.
The Lancers had an opportunity to score in the extra period, attempting a shot three minutes in. With the rain continuing to fall, Froshour took advantage of her time in the offensive end and ended the contest with a game-winner. The four goals are the most since the Explorers scored five in a 5-0 win over Bryant on Sept. 23, 2008.
Carey scored the game's first goal in the 27th minute off a pass from sophomore Lindsay Fry and the Explorers (2-4) went ahead 2-0 on freshman Janel Paukovits' second goal in as many games seven minutes later. Senior Kara Harpel was credited with the assist.
Longwood's Melissa Strickland made it 2-1 in the 41st minute with her goal and Knop and Furbush combined to give the Lancers the lead late in the half.
The Lancers (1-4) had an edge in the stats, outshooting the hosts, 14-6, and posting a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners. La Salle scored four times on its six shots.
Junior Emma Ruth had four saves in the victory.
The Explorers wrap up their three-game homestand on Sunday when they host Siena at 1 PM.
