Record-Setting Night for Explorers in Win at Lafayette

Sept. 1, 2009

Box Score

EASTON, PA - It was a record-setting night for La Salle Women's Soccer Tuesday. Thanks to its 2-0 victory over Lafayette, the Explorers improved to 4-0 to start the season for the first time in the program's 24-year history.

Also with the shutout, La Salle has now held three straight opponents scoreless for only the fourth time in school history. The first time was in 1989, when the Explorers finished the season with three shutouts (October 28 - November 4). The other two times were during the 2004 season, once during games five through seven and then games 14 through 16.

Lastly, in net for the Explorers was freshman Gabrielle Pakhtigian, who made three saves to earn her second consecutive shutout victory to start her career in the Blue and Gold and now becomes the only freshmen at the school to ever accomplished the feat.

Only one other player - Jill Weber, a junior transfer from Carnegie Mellon where she was a DIII All-American - has ever posted two shutouts in their first two starts at La Salle. She did that in the 1995 season, helping that team open 3-0-1, the previous best mark to start a year before the 2009 season.

In the season-opening match for Lafayette, Ally Kenney put the Leopards in a hole quickly as she tallied her team-leading third goal of the year just 6:24 into the game off a Traci DePasquale assist - her team-leading fourth of the year.

DePasquale upped her season points total to eight and her career points to 66 - now third all-time at the school with Kristin Hextall (2004-07) next on the list at 83. She is also just two assists shy of second all-time in a career at La Salle.

Just three minutes after the half, Melanie Gamble scored her 13th career goal - just two off the all-time top 10 list - off of Kenney's third assist of 2009, which gave Kenney the team-lead in points with nine.

La Salle is next in action this Friday when the Explorers host Lehigh at McCarthy Stadium with a 7 PM kickoff. Not only will they be looking to extend their best start, but they also have a chance to become just the third team ever to register a school-best five-game winning streak.

The first time a La Salle squad won five straight at any point in a season was in 2000, from October 1 through 15, the other team was the 2004 squad from October 15 through the 29.
