PHILADELPHIA - Traci DePasquale netted the game winner in the 67th minute and Melissa Sanger registered the shutout in net for the Explorers, as La Salle Women's Soccer downed visiting Delaware, 1-0, Sunday at McCarthy Stadium in its final non-conference match of the season.
With the victory, the Explorers improved to 6-2-1 in 2009, the best mark for any team in the program's history after nine matches. The previous best was the 2000 squad, who were 6-3-0. That team then won five straight games, however, to get to 11-3-0 and still holds the mark for the all-time best record at 12-6.
DePasquale gave La Salle a one-goal lead in the second half, when she took a pass from Zovel Hyre and came in on a breakaway and scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season - but her first game winner of 2009. She now has five game winners in her career and it was her 25th career tally - tying her for fourth all-time at the school with Krista Lee (2000-03).
The match was scoreless at that point thanks to Sanger, who made a pair of early saves - two in the game's first 6:30. She had to make two more saves, and had five total on the day, after the goal to register her third shutout of the season. Sanger improved to 4-0-1 this season and now has nine career shutouts, tied for third all-time at La Salle with Kerry Schamberger (2000-04).
Delaware (3-2-1) took 12 total shots in the game, while its goalkeeper Annie Bevan made four saves in the contest.
The Explorers will now turn their attention to the Atlantic 10 Conference and their first weekend's opponents. They travel to Saint Louis, Friday, with an 8 PM EST kickoff and then host Richmond on Sunday at 1 PM.
