Tough Effort Falls Short Against UMBC, 3-0

Sept. 26, 2009

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Maryland-Baltimore County's Andrew Bulls scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season as the visiting Retrievers held on for a 3-0 win over the Explorers on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. The Explorers fall to 3-4-1, while the Retrievers push their record to 9-0-0.

Bulls hit for both goals within a seven-minute span. The first score came in the 21st minute as he slotted in the ball from the left side of the box on a short pass from Levi Houapeu. At 28:13, he struck again after snagging a loose ball in Retriever territory and finishing it on a short breakaway.

The Explorers quickly contained Bulls after that, and held the Retrievers scoreless for 60 minutes spanning both periods. The Blue and Gold controlled the intense second half that saw both teams whistled for a combined three yellow cards.

Jordan Torres nearly put the Explorers on the board in the 57th minute as his header spun off of the crossbar. Dan Korenyi also came very close, rocketing a ball past Retriever keeper Phil Saunders, but a defender stopped the shot just short of the net.

The Retrievers dashed any comeback hopes with the third tally in the 88th minute, a 35-yard shot by Matt Knight. Knight took a short pass from Vince Savarese, then flicked it over Explorer keeper Kyle Quigley who was playing out to pick up the ball, and it rolled into the net.

The Explorers dominated the corner kick statistic, as they took five to the Retrievers' one. They also held the advantage on fouls as UMBC was whistled for 13 to La Salle's 10. The Retrievers held a slim 12-10 advantage on shots, and a 9-6 advantage on shots-on-goal.

Quigley and Saunders each picked up five saves in the effort.

The Explorers hit the road again as they head to Newark, DE, for a tilt at Delaware on Tuesday (9/29) at 7:00 PM. They return home to McCarthy Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they host Marist at 1:00 PM.
