Sept. 26, 2009

Box Score

BETHLEHEM, PA - Junior Emma Ruth made five saves for her third shutout of the season and freshman Rebecca Chylack scored for the third time in the last four games to give the La Salle field hockey team a 1-0 victory at Lehigh on Saturday evening. The goal was the team-leading sixth of the season for Chylack, who has won the past two Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week awards.

"I am pleased with the shutout and the victory," head coach Michelle Marks said. "Offensively we created some good things and Rebecca capitalized on a great corner, as she has been thus done all season. Overall, it was a hard-fought game and I'm proud of the way we played."

The Explorers (4-6) were outshot 7-2 in the opening stanza but kept the game scoreless going into intermission. The visitors took advantage of their second penalty corner in 30 seconds in the 48th minute, as junior Beth Carey set up Chylack to break the 0-0 tie. The assist was Carey's team-best sixth of the season.

Ruth made four of her five stops in the second half to preserve the lead. She entered the game second in the A-10 in saves, shutouts and GAA.

Lehigh's Lillia Stefaniwsky had five saves in defeat. The Mountain Hawks fall to 2-5.

The hosts held a 15-10 advantage in shots and a 9-8 lead in corners.

La Salle returns to action on Thursday with a visit to Rider at 4 PM to wrap up a four-game road swing. The Explorers will begin a three-game homestand on Saturday when they host #13 Stanford (8-0).
