CINCINNATI, OH - La Salle Women's Soccer cut a two-goal halftime deficit in half in the 52nd minute, however the host Xavier Musketeers added two second half insurance tallies to secure a 4-1 victory Friday night in each teams' Atlantic 10 Conference opener.
The Musketeers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after just 15 minutes of play on a pair of breakaway goals. Mariah Whitaker scored at the 11:26 mark unassisted, and Jessica Brooks netted the second off an assist from Leslie Boersma.
Out of the break, Anna Dolhansky pulled the Explorers to within one with her fifth goal of 2010, which was assisted by Jess Hopton, her third of the year.
Xavier (5-5-0, 1-0-0 A-10) used a pair of Lauren Heap goals in the 71st minute, off a Carly Wenzel assist, and 81st minute, assisted by Chelsea Burns, to put the game out of reach.
La Salle 6-5-1, 0-1-0 A-10) outshot the Musketeers 17-10, which included a 9-6 edge in shots on goal, but the Xavier goalies Jennifer Perri and Jenny Rosen each made three saves, while there were also a pair of team saves.
The Explorers will take Saturday off before facing Dayton on Sunday at 1 PM.
