Oct. 15, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle scored two first half goals and withstood a furious second half charge from city rival Temple to defeat the Owls, 2-1, on a windy Friday afternoon at DeVincent Field. Junior Lindsay Fry and freshman Mariel Papa scored goals for the Explorers.

Fry opened up the scoring after a cross from senior Rachel Deaner in the 14th minute. The score remained 1-0 until 38 second before halftime when Papa scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from senior Beth Carey. Carey is now one assist from moving into a tie for second on the all-time assist list at LU.

Temple (6-9, 1-1 A-10) controlled play for the second half, outshooting the hosts 12-2 in the period. But the defense, led by senior goalkeeper Emma Ruth remained strong. Ruth stopped nine shots total, including six in the second half.

The Owls scored their only goal in the 39th minute when Bridget Settles scored on a penalty shot. It would be the only tally for the visitors.

Sarah Dalrymple made two saves for TU, which held an 18-7 lead in shots and 10-3 advantage in corners.

La Salle (6-8, 1-1 A-10) will visit another city rival, Saint Joseph's, on Sunday at noon. The game will be played at Drexel University.
