Explorers Win Second Straight, Knock Off Temple 1-0

Oct. 2, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - A goal in the 17th minute from Ryan Richter was all La Salle needed to beat Soccer 6 foe Temple 1-0 at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday. The win was the second straight for the Explorers, who move to 2-4-2, while the Owls fall to 2-5-2.

The match does not count in the Atlantic 10 standings this season, but counts in the Soccer Six.

Richter directed a free kick straight into the right side of the net for his fifth goal of the season at the 16:42 mark.

The Explorers and Owls played even ball in the first half, with both squads taking seven shots and being charged with six fouls.

The Owl offense kicked it up in the second half with 10 shots, including a flurry of five shots from the 80th to 83rd minutes but the Explorer defense was stellar in holding the visitors off the scoreboard. The Owls came perilously close to scoring when Jake Lister rocketed a shot toward the net in the 87th minute that bounced off the left post.

John McCarthy picks up his second win in goal and made seven saves in the effort. Bret Mollon was in net for the Owls, stopping three shots.

The Explorers have now won two straight over the Owls, with both wins coming at McCarthy Stadium. The series between the squads has been low scoring, as the last three match-ups have been decided by 1-0 scores.

The Explorers return to McCarthy Stadium next Friday (10/8) when they open Atlantic 10 play with Fordham at 7:30 PM.
