Plumhoff's Goal Lifts Explorers Past Richmond, 1-0

Oct. 22, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Jason Plumhoff's 59th minute goal was all the scoring needed as the La Salle men's soccer team downed Richmond 1-0 on Friday night to open the road trip on a winning note. The win lifts the Explorers to 4-6-2 (2-2 Atlantic 10) while the Spiders fall to 3-9-1 (2-2 Atlantic 10).

Plumhoff (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) subbed in at the 56:54 mark and found the back of the net less than two minutes later for his second collegiate score. A Mike Pio (Warminster, PA/William Tennent) shot at 58:14 was saved by Spider goalie Brock Tomlinson, but the Explorers retained possession when Jidell Roach (Willow Grove, PA/Abington) picked up the rebound. Roach sent the ball into the box from the left side, where Plumhoff got a hold of it at the 25-yard mark and kicked it into the upper left corner of the net for the score.

The two squads played fairly even ball, as the Spiders held a slim 12-11 advantage on shots. However, the Explorers overcame a 9-4 corner kick deficit. Senior Ryan Richter (Southampton, PA/William Tennent) led all players with five attempted shots, while Jake Russell led the Spiders with four including an attempt just 55 seconds into the contest.

Rookie netminder John McCarthy (Cinnaminson, NJ/Northeast Catholic) picked up his fourth shutout of the season and made five saves in the effort. Tomlinson registered three saves in the Spiders' loss. The Explorer defense also played a big role, blocking three shots.

The Explorers continue on to Washington, DC, to play the second game of their four-game road trip at George Washington at 1:00 PM.
