PHILADELPHIA - Ryan Richter (Southampton, PA/William Tennent) scored two second-half goals to lift La Salle to a 2-0 Atlantic 10 shutout of George Washington on Sunday afternoon. The win marks the second straight conference win for the Explorers who move to 3-2 in the Atlantic 10 and 5-6-2 overall. The win also continued a strong start to the four-game road trip as the Explorers now own two straight shutouts.
The Explorers and Colonials (2-12, 0-5 Atlantic 10) played evenly in the first half with the Explorers holding a slim 8-7 advantage on shots. Colonial keeper Erik Haug stopped three Explorer shots on goal in the first half, trying to help his him win their first conference game of the season.
However, the Explorer offense broke through in the second half as Richter took a pass from Jidell Roach (Willow Grove, PA/Abington) in the 67th minute and got the ball past Haug from near the post. Although that proved the game-winner, Richter netted an insurance goal nine minutes later when Jason Plumhoff (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) fed him a pass to near the 18 yard line, from where Richter launched the ball into the upper left corner of the net.
Richter now owns nine goals on the season with four game winning scores. Plumhoff added his team-leading fourth assist of the season as well.
Rookie netminder John McCarthy (Cinnaminson, NJ/Northeast Catholic) made six saves on Sunday for his fifth shutout of the season. Haug stopped six shots for the Colonials in suffering the loss.
The Explorers outshot the home team 20-16 and also owned a commanding 13-7 lead on corner kicks.
The team remains on the road next weekend with a jaunt up to New England. The Explorers take on Rhode Island on Friday (10/29) at 7:00 PM before heading to Massachusetts for a 1:00 PM game on Sunday (10/31) with the Minutemen.
