PHILADELPHIA - La Salle Women's Soccer dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 Conference action at McCarthy Stadium Friday afternoon.
After 30 minutes in which each team had just a pair of shots, the Rams broke the scoreless time at the 31:12 mark when Nelli Ruotsalainen found Kaylen Shimoda for her sixth tally of the year.
Renee Washington would tie the match 10 minutes after the break with her ninth goal of the season off assists from Courtney Niemiec and Ashley Chilcoat. For Niemiec, it was her team-high tying fifth of the season, while Chilcoat now has two.
Rhode Island (3-12-2, 3-4-1 A-10) responded at the 62:03 mark when Ashley Evangelista scored her first of the year off an assist from Courtney David. Stephanie Santos provided an insurance tally 12 minutes later off an assist from Evangelista.
For Washington, her ninth goal ties her for the 10th-most in a single season at the school with four others, and gives La Salle a nine-goal scorer for the fourth straight year. She also increased her shot total for the season to 66, tying her with Lisa McDermott for the third most in a single season.
La Salle (9-8-2, 3-4-1 A-10) will battle Massachusetts in a crucial match to determine if the Explorers will advance to the A-10 Women's Soccer Championship next week. Before the contest, four of the Explorer players will be honored as part of Senior Day.
