Massachusetts' Katie Kelly scored the game-winning goal with 19 minutes remaining to lift the visiting Minutewomen to a 2-1 victory over La Salle on Senior Day at DeVincent Field. Explorer seniors came up big in their final contest, as Emma Ruth made 11 saves and Gabrielle Nolt scored the lone La Salle goal.
With the win, UMass (13-6) extends its winning streak to nine games and captures the Atlantic 10 regular season championship with a perfect 7-0 record.
Thando Zono got the visitors on the board with an unassisted goal in the 17th minute. Nolt answered with under two minutes remaining before intermission with her career-best and team-leading seventh goal of the season. It was also unassisted.
Kelly provided the game winner midway through the second half to give UM the victory. She rebounded her own shot after a save by Ruth and found the back of the cage.
UMass held a 24-8 advantage in shots and an 18-5 lead in corners. UMass goalie Alesha Widdall made one save.
Ruth finishes her La Salle career second all-time in shutouts and goals against average, fifth in minutes, and sixth in saves.
Sophomore Neelam Kumar ends the season with seven assists, good for sixth on the single season charts.
Senior Beth Carey ends her career fourth in assists and seventh in points.
Carey, Nolt, Ruth, Rachel Deaner, Lauren Jackson, and Alysen Larsen were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
La Salle completes the season with a 7-12 record and 2-5 mark in the Atlantic 10.
