Last-Minute Goal Lifts Explorers to 2-1 Win Over Fordham

Oct. 8, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Ryan Richter scored both goals, including the game winner with 59 seconds remaining, as La Salle topped Fordham 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. The win marks the third straight for the Explorers, who are now 3-4-2 (1-0 Atlantic 10). The Rams fall to 5-5 (0-1 Atlantic 10).

Richter got the Explorers on the board early, as a Fordham foul on Glenroy Chapman as he attempted to shoot his own rebound shot in the box earned the Explorers a penalty kick just 5:14 into the contest. Richter took the kick and sent it low and to the right past Ram keeper Ryan Meara.

The two squads played back-and-forth ball until John McHugh broke through for the Rams in the 36th minute. Tim Richardson tipped McHugh the ball, who then took a shot from the wide left at about the 15 yard line.

Just as overtime seemed certain, Richter netted his second goal of the game. The Explorers were awarded a corner, taken by Jason Plumhoff. Plumhoff sent the ball into the box and Mike Stanton deflected it over to Richter, who finished the game-winning shot.

The Explorers and Rams took 16 shots each, led by Richter's eight. The Explorers held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks, with five of those in the first half.

John McCarthy picked up the win in goal, making six saves. Meara suffered the loss for the Rams and stopped four shots.

The Explorers return home next Friday (10/15) when they host St. Bonaventure at 7:00 PM.
