Explorers Fall to #19 Dayton

Oct. 9, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - No. 19 Dayton proved too much for the volleyball team, as the Explorers fell 3-0 (12-25, 16-25, 7-25).

"I thought our passing was good today," Alex Kennedy said. "Our offense was good as well, but not good enough to beat a team of that caliber."

Dayton's Amanda Cowdrey tallied a match-high 12 kills and zero errors to post a .545 hitting percentage.

For La Salle, Samantha Tulskie notched six kills.  Kelly Scanlon added five kills and led the team in digs with eight.  Kourtney Clark tallied 11 assists, while Kennedy contributed two block assists and three kills on the day.

"I thought Alex played extremely well today in the middle hitter position," head coach Dave Stever said. "She's been injured for the past two years and is starting to play strong again."

In the opening set, La Salle hung with Dayton until the Flyers used a 8-1 run in the middle of the match to go ahead 23-10.  Two straight kills by Cowdrey closed out the set, 23-12.

La Salle tied up the second frame at 6-6 on a kill by Kennedy and a winner by Clark gave the Blue and Gold a brief 7-6 lead.  The Flyers responded with five straight points.  The Explorers were within three at 14-11 after a Dayton attack error, but the Flyers would go on to take the 25-16 win.

The Explorers struggled in the third set, committing several errors as the Flyers dominated the game.

"In the third set they were hitting over our blocks and there wasn't much we could do about that," Stever said.

The Explorers will next travel to Washington, D.C. to face George Washington on Thursday.
